Acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki (Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke) tells the fanciful animated tale of a young girl who stumbles into a secret world inhabited by strange spirits, assorted creatures and a grumpy sorceress. The girl’s slovenly parents are turned into pigs, and she is faced with the task of turning them back to human form and finding her way home. Academy Award Winner for Best Animated Feature.

This fantasy action-comedy/love story from Japan focuses on a group of college students who get mixed up in the world of Horumo—a fighting competition where the contestants call upon ancient spirits to inhabit miniature statues to do battle for them in an arena. Supernatural combat might not be the best fit for freshman Akira Abe when he falls in love with classmate Kyoko, but if he has any hope of getting close to her he’ll need to join the school’s Horumo team—the Kyoto University Azure Dragons!

Ran

Ran is the twenty-seventh film from director Akira Kurosawa (Rashomon, The Seven Samurai). In its epic scale, stylistic grandeur and tragic contemplation of human destiny, it brings together the great themes and gorgeous images of the director’s life work. A brilliantly conceived meditation on Shakespeare’s King Lear, crossed with the history of Japan’s 16th-century Civil Wars and the legend of Mori, a feudal warlord with three sons, the film’s title translates as “chaos” or “turmoil.” Tatsuya Nakadai stars as the Great Lord Hidetora Ichimonji, an aging ruler who decides to abdicate and divide his land equally among his three sons, unleashing an intense power struggle as his sons and daughters-in-law scheme for power and revenge. A spectacular adventure punctuated by epic battle scenes, at the time of its original release Ran was the most expensive film ever made in Japan, with a visual splendor that’s still breathtaking today.

We would love to see veteran alumni out in full force to give the new alums a raucous welcome back; we bet your first happy hour after returning was about as awesome as salted caramel ice cream (which is AWESOME; pay no attention to naysayers ).

Tales From Earthsea is an adaptation by Goro Miyazaki (son of animator Hayao Miyazaki) of Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel A Wizard of Earthsea, the first book of the award-winning Earthsea cycle. Ged (voice of Timothy Dalton), was the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea. He was once called Sparrowhawk, a reckless youth, hungry for power and knowledge, who tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. It’s the tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death’s threshold to restore the balance.

As usual, we will have a PNWJETAA booth and we need your help!  This is a great chance to tell people about your experiences, answer some questions and spread the word about JET.  You may inspire future ALTs or reconnect with some alumni.  And of course, you’ll have lots of fun!

When: Saturday, September 11th from 10am-6pm and Sunday, September 12th from 10am-4:30pm

Where: Bellevue College
